Raw vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, celery, and carrots help to scrape off particles from your teeth. They also have a high water content that washes away food particles.
Everyone knows that vegetables are high in fiber, but did you know that high fiber foods help to reduce inflammation in the mouth? The added benefit of dark greens having a high iron content helps protect the teeth from enamel eroding bacteria and acid.
As if you didn't need another reason to eat cheese! Cheese actually helps keep your teeth strong because it's high in calcium, phosphorous, lactic acid and protien that helps protect tooth enamel from decay. Plus, the density and texture of the cheese acts as a natural tooth brush cleaning away food particles.
Strawberry contain malic acid, which breaks down stains on the teeth. Some tooth paste actually has malic acid as an ingredient. They also have the added benefit of containing ellagitannins, antioxidants, and vitamin C which reduce stain causing bacteria and reduces inflammation in the mouth. You can actually increase the whitening effects of strawberries by crushing them and adding baking powder.
Like strawberries, apples are high in malic acid. Their texture and high water content scrub away stains, plaque, and tartar. An apple a day really does keep the dentist away! Or at least for six months until your next dental appointment.
Because raisins contain sugar and are sticky like candy, you would think that they wouldn't be good for your teeth. But they actually do whiten and protect teeth! Raisins stimulate saliva and neutralize acids created by bacteria. Research has shown that cereals with raisins help to protect the teeth more than cereals without raisins.
Like raisins, chomping down on different types of nuts stimulates saliva flow. They're hard textures can remove stains, plaque, tartar, and harmful bacteria. So basically you can go nuts eating nuts!
Mushrooms contain a compound called lentinan which prevents bacteria from growing in your mouth. Mushrooms go great with a number of dishes, you can't go wrong with mushrooms!

Reasons for Tooth Extractions
At Pershing Family Dental, our dentist will always do their best to avoid a tooth extraction if possible. Whether it be through a veneer, crown, or root canal, we will try to save it. However, sometimes keeping your tooth will not be an option.
Decay or Trauma
If a tooth is suffering from severe dental decay or trauma, the only solution will probably be tooth extraction. It's important to remove the tooth in order to prevent an infection or an abscess, which will eventually lead to the decay of the surrounding teeth, gums, and jawbone. If a tooth has been cracked or broken, our dentist may also choose to remove the tooth for the same reasons and a decayed tooth.
Wisdom teeth are 2 pairs of adult molars that will usually start to emerge in a persons late teens to early 20's. While wisdom teeth are not always in need of removal, many people will suffer from discomfort or pain from an impacted wisdom tooth. Wisdom teeth become impacted when they grow in crooked. Some wisdom teeth will just be to large and begin to change the bite, making it difficult to bite down. When this occurs the wisdom teeth will have to be removed.
The dentist may also decide that you need a tooth extraction treatment for orthodontic (braces) reasons. If teeth are to large, crowded, or severely crooked they may need to be removed in order for orthodontic treatment to be effective. Usually, the same 2 teeth on either side of the arch will need to be removed to keep your bite comfortable and symmetrical.
Healing from Tooth Extractions
After the tooth extraction their are some simple tips to keep in mind to maintain optimal comfort levels and help in the recovery process.
Make sure to take any medication that the doctor has prescribed to you according to the instructions given to you. Make sure to ask the doctor which pain killers are best suited for your personal situation.
Avoid Hard or Hot Foods
After the removal of your tooth you may find it hard to chew from sensitivity of the gums. Make sure to avoid any hard food so that you do not disturb the surgical area. Also, avoid hot food or drinks following surgery so that you do not burn yourself. Sedatives may have made the mouth numb and you will not be able to tell how hot the food or drink is.
If the effected area is swollen make sure to use ice on it. Ice will reduce swelling and relieve pressure to the area where surgery has taken place.
Remember to brush softly to avoid disturbing any stitches. Also, check to make sure there isn't any excessive bleeding. Make sure to call our office right away if you experience any excessive bleeding or pain after oral surgery.

Beauty & Benefits of Dental Implants
Along with restoring your smile and confidence to smile, dental implants also restore the ability to eat in comfort. While some patients may be able to get dental implants in one or two visits, more severe case may take a few months to fully restore your smile.
Because dental implants are made of titanium (a bio-compatible material), they bond firmly to the jaw bone. This provides a sturdy foundation for a crown, bridge, or dentures to be placed on top of. While dental implants are more expensive than other treatment options, it is the most permanent solution to replacing missing teeth. With a 97% success rate, dental implants provide the best solution for replacing missing teeth. With proper maintenance and care, your dental implants can last you for the rest of you life.
Dental Implant Maintence
Dental implants provide you with a second chance to take care of your teeth. Since they are literally replacements for your former teeth, they have the same maintenance routine and schedule. If you brush and floss routinely every day along with seeing the dentist twice a year, your dental implants should last you a lifetime.

Ashley is a wealth of knowledge on how to keep your teeth happy and healthy. We asked Ashley to give us her top 4 tips for healthy teeth and this is what we got!
Brush and Floss Your Teeth Daily
Everyone knows that brushing and flossing your teeth regularly is the best way to maintain oral health. This habit will allow you to have white teeth, fresh breath, and healthy gums. It will also allow you to save money on costly dental treatments and procedures that come from avoiding dental hygiene.
Flossing and brushing regularly will also help with overall health. Without regular flossing, you might notice that your gums bleed, which is a sign of gingivitis. One of the problems associated with this is that it allows bacteria to enter your bloodstream and attack your organs. This can also eventually lead to heart disease. Flossing also helps prevent diabetes
Visit Your Dentist Every 6 Months
Regular dental check ups are important because they help keep your teeth and gums healthy. You should have a regular dental visit at least every 6 months or as recommended by your dental professional.
Your dentist can detect early signs of various types of cancer, periodontal disease, osteoporosis, dementia, heart disease, and acid reflux disease. While regularly brushing and flossing your teeth are good for maintaining oral health, 6 month check ups are the most important aspect to overall health.
Get Sealants for Your Molars
Dental sealants are usually used to treat children, but they are adaptable and effective for adult patients as well. The sealant is simply a protective barrier that is applied to the surface of teeth that are vulnerable to cavities. The barrier helps to keep out food particles and bacteria and thereby reduce the incidence of cavities. Since dental sealants reduce your risk of getting cavities so significantly, you spend a lot less time and money dealing with oral health issues.
Avoid Sugary Snacks & Drinks
When you eat and drink sugary and starchy foods, you’re not only feeding yourself — you’re potentially feeding the plaque that can cause problems in your mouth. A balanced diet, low in added sugar, is not only a great way to look and feel healthier but it will protect your teeth and preserve your winning smile!
