7 Foods that Whiten Your Teeth

A good way to keep your teeth as bright as the day you got your last whitening treatment is of course brushing and flossing daily. But, did you know that you can also help keep them white by eating certain types of foods? This article explores 7 types of foods that will keep you smiling with confidence and a bright smile!

Raw Vegetables

Raw vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, celery, and carrots help to scrape off particles from your teeth. They also have a high water content that washes away food particles.

Everyone knows that vegetables are high in fiber, but did you know that high fiber foods help to reduce inflammation in the mouth? The added benefit of dark greens having a high iron content helps protect the teeth from enamel eroding bacteria and acid.

Cheese

As if you didn’t need another reason to eat cheese! Cheese actually helps keep your teeth strong because it’s high in calcium, phosphorous, lactic acid and protien that helps protect tooth enamel from decay. Plus, the density and texture of the cheese acts as a natural tooth brush cleaning away food particles.

Strawberries

Strawberry contain malic acid, which breaks down stains on the teeth. Some tooth paste actually has malic acid as an ingredient. They also have the added benefit of containing ellagitannins, antioxidants, and vitamin C which reduce stain causing bacteria and reduces inflammation in the mouth. You can actually increase the whitening effects of strawberries by crushing them and adding baking powder.

Apples

Like strawberries, apples are high in malic acid. Their texture and high water content scrub away stains, plaque, and tartar. An apple a day really does keep the dentist away! Or at least for six months until your next dental appointment.

Raisins

Because raisins contain sugar and are sticky like candy, you would think that they wouldn’t be good for your teeth. But they actually do whiten and protect teeth! Raisins stimulate saliva and neutralize acids created by bacteria. Research has shown that cereals with raisins help to protect the teeth more than cereals without raisins.

Nuts

Like raisins, chomping down on different types of nuts stimulates saliva flow. They’re hard textures can remove stains, plaque, tartar, and harmful bacteria. So basically you can go nuts eating nuts!

Mushrooms

Mushrooms contain a compound called lentinan which prevents bacteria from growing in your mouth. Mushrooms go great with a number of dishes, you can’t go wrong with mushrooms!
