At Pershing Family Dental, we understand that undergoing a tooth extraction can be a daunting experience. We are committed to making your recovery process as smooth and comfortable as possible. To support you on this journey, we’ve provided comprehensive at-home care instructions to help you heal effectively and avoid complications. This guide will walk you through essential postoperative care steps, guiding you every step of the way.
Postoperative Care for Extractions
To ensure a swift recovery, following specific guidelines after your extraction is crucial. A key part of healing is to avoid activities that might disrupt the healing process. For at least 48 hours post-surgery, refrain from smoking or using smokeless tobacco, as these can impede healing and increase the risk of complications. Alcohol should also be avoided during this period for similar reasons.
Avoid Certain Actions
To protect the surgical site, avoid spitting, rinsing, swishing, or sucking through a straw for at least 24 hours. These actions can dislodge the clot that forms in the socket, known as a dry socket, which can be painful and delay healing.
Operative Site Care
After your surgery, your dentist will provide you with gauze to bite on. Following their instructions and applying pressure for about 30 minutes is important. If bleeding continues, replace the gauze and maintain the pressure. Consistent pressure is more effective than frequently changing the gauze.
Expect some slight bleeding or oozing for the first day or two. Consider using an old pillowcase or placing a towel on your bedding to protect your bedding.
Managing Swelling
On the day of your surgery, reduce swelling by applying ice packs to the side of your face. Follow a 20-minute on, 20-minute off routine. Swelling typically peaks within 48-72 hours post-surgery and should gradually decrease.
Activity Restrictions
Plan to head straight home after your surgery and rest. Avoid using stairs alone on the first day and refrain from any strenuous activity such as sports, aerobics, or heavy lifting for at least three days. Remember to also avoid spitting, rinsing, swishing, or using a straw for the first 24 hours to protect the extraction site.
Medications
Take all medications as directed by your dentist. If antibiotics are prescribed, ensure you complete the entire course, even if you start feeling better. It’s vital to manage pain with prescribed medication but exercise caution: do not drive or operate machinery while taking these medications.
Additionally, begin using the prescribed mouth rinse 24 hours after your surgery, following your dentist’s directions carefully.
Dietary Recommendations
Maintaining a soft diet is recommended for the first 24-48 hours post-surgery. Ideal options include pasta, mashed potatoes, soups, scrambled eggs, yogurt, pudding, milkshakes, and seedless smoothies. These foods are gentle on your mouth and provide necessary nutrition without irritating the surgical site.
Foods to Avoid
To protect your healing mouth, avoid using straws and consuming foods like fruits with seeds, popcorn, chips, nuts, acidic foods (such as oranges and tomatoes), and carbonated drinks for the first week. These could disrupt the clot or irritate the extraction site, delaying healing.
Remember to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids, but make sure they are not too hot.
Symptoms to Report to Your Doctor Immediately
Monitoring your symptoms is crucial for a smooth recovery. Contact your dentist promptly if you experience any of the following:
- A temperature greater than 101.5°F
- Increasing pain or pain that doesn’t resolve with medication
- Bleeding or swelling beyond what your dentist advised
These could be signs of complications that require immediate attention.
